My laminate counter top is burned. Can I repair it? PDF Print E-mail

Written by Stan GarnetAlmost anything can be repaired even laminate tops. The unfortunate part of repairing a laminate top is that it generally means replacing it. However there is another solution you may wish to consider and this also plays into aesthetics. If the burn is in the right place then you can cut it out and insert ceramic tile, stone or another durable material which can be used on a counter top. You can actually redesign the top by inserting decorative pieces of tile creating a border and accent points. These can also be functional if placed correctly next to your oven or cook tops.

Should you decide to take on the project of adding accent pieces etcetera into your burned laminate top then the following points should be considered.

  1. Select a durable tile and one that will not scratch easily.
  2. Make sure it is not too thick and will fit with the current laminate top color wise and design wise. You do not want to have to cut totally through the counter top board. You need to maintain support.
  3. Use a tile that will require at least a ¼ inch grout line. A thin grout line is not recommended and will only cause you problems down the road.
  4. Try and lay out the tile in a pattern and design to best compliment your counter.
  5. Line the tile up and mark its location. Allow for a grout line when marking it out.
  6. You will need a router with a very small bit to cut out the laminate counter to accept the tile. Make sure not to chisel out the corners but leave a rounded corner. This will eliminate stress corners and further cracking.
  7. Line and support the bottom of the tile insert to make sure you do not weaken the counter top.
  8. Protect the edges of the laminate top that are being cut with masking tape and wood pieces to be used as a guide.
  9. After the laminate is cut out make sure to water proof and seal the exposed board including the edges.
  10. Set the tile into place with approved glues.
  11. Apply grout after the appropriate drying period has passed.
  12. Apply sealer to the grout lines 10 days later.
Should you decide to undertake this type of project then you will save yourself considerable dollars. You will also create a conversation piece. The worst case scenario is that it will not work out for you and you will need to buy a new counter top.
